The number of ayat in the Quran is a matter of scholarly discussion and interpretation. The commonly accepted number of verses or ayat is 6,236. There is variation in counting due to difference in categorization by some scholars on how to categorize longer verses: what one considers as one verse, another may consider as two or more verses. These differences in counting have absolutely no impact on the contents and message of the Quran whatsoever, since the text remains one and the same. Different methods of classification exist, and scholars and traditions implement these when trying to come up with variation in their count. The widely recognized figure of 6,236 verses is the prevalent count among Quran scholars and readers.
Indeed, Ayat al-Kursi is considered among the strongest and most important Ayat in the Quran, from the Holy Quran-Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255. Many call it the greatest Ayat of the Quran. Muslims say Ayat al-Kursi for protection against jinn, troubles, or generally during daytime.
It emphasizes the oneness of Allah and describes His attributes, underlining His sovereign knowledge and authoritative power over creation. It is supposed to remind one of Allah’s greatness and majesty and to stir believers to trust in Allah and approach Him for help against any element of danger. Most of the Muslims recite Ayat al-Kursi as a supplication and as connecting means to the divine from where spiritual strength and protection flow.
He is eternal, always there, and the only supreme owner of everything that exists. Allah is one and unique; He has no children and parents.
Verse of the Quran
The smallest division of the Quran is called an ayah, which refers to the divisions of Surahs. The length of ayah varies throughout the Quran; this is what Muslims, in English, refer to as ‘verses.’
First verse of the Quran.
Surah Al-Alaq was the first revelation upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad, which took place in Makkah and consisted of a total of five verses. It is the 96th chapter of the Quran.
The hidden message carried in this Surah is that the Muslims are bound to present themselves to Allah in all positive as well as all negative circumstances. The ‘Allah’, who knows each and everything even beyond man’s perception, is invented in this Ayah. This Ayah tells us that’ Allah has created man from clot and is Most Courteous taught the use of the pen to mankind, and that which he did not know.’
Advantages of Reciting Surah Al-Baqarah
This Surah is particularly a guard for Muslims against Shaitan; to get rid of Shaitan from their houses, one should recite Surah Al Baqarah.
Our beloved Prophet Muhammad S.A.W told Muslims that the person who recites it continuously will have as much blessing in his house, but the one who does not pay attention to this Surah will have sorrow. The person who recites Surah Al Baqarah will get a high reward in heaven and be superior among all humankind.
With this Surah, the recitation of the ten Ayat at the beginning of sleep must be done in order for Shaitan not to enter his house on that night. The Muslims protect themselves and their families by reciting this Surah on a daily basis.
If one recites Surah Al Baqarah, angels gather to listen to it specifically for its beauty and excellence. To commit the Quran to memory, one is advised to recite the ten Ayat at the end of Surah Al Baqarah before sleep.
Last verse that was revealed in the Quran.
The last verse or Ayat considered to have been revealed to our Prophet Muhammad S.A.W is not yet confirmed. Some scholars believe that Ayat 281 of Surat Al Baqarah is indeed the last verse of the Holy Quran. Where, Allah reminds one to dread the Day when everyone will return to Him and that every soul shall be paid in full what it has done, and none shall be dealt with unjustly.
On the other side, some scholars state that Ayat 3 of Surat Al-Ma’idah is the last revelation which was given to our Holy Prophet Muhammad S.A.W from the Holy Quran. In this Ayat, it has been said, “This day I have perfected for you your religion, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.”
Importance of Ayat in Muslims Life
Listening to and reciting the Holy Quran and its verses bear considerable significance in the life of a Muslim. A Muslim is associated with the voice and guidance of Allah at that moment. At moments of sorrow, turning to the Quran brings solace, encouragement, and the merciful presence of Allah.
When faced with difficulties and not knowing exactly how to begin to try to overcome a problem, one is usually advised by wise friends and relatives to look towards Ayat or the verses of the Holy Quran wherein lie all solutions to every problem written in this book.
