“Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua” is a sensitive Urdu poem written by the world-famous Philosopher-Poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal. This invaluable piece of literature holds great esteem in Urdu literature, and this-day it continues to form an integral part of every meeting, school, and religious function.
‘Prayer in lips becomes on’ means the feelings of devotion and plea in the deep-down subject of the poetry. The poem speaks in the person of a child’s innocence, sincerity, devotion. He reaches out not only for guidance but also for strength and blessings from Allah.
The poem is made up of stanzas that turn to different aspects of the child’s prayer and his relationship with Allah. From granting guidance and inspiration to every prayer issuing from the lips, he reaches out for virtues like knowledge, wisdom, and patience, realizing their impact towards leading a righteous, fulfilling life.
As the prayer unwinds, he continues to ask Allah for protection and light, praying to be saved from the tests and trials of life. For the love of God, His mercy, and forgiveness, all of which give meaning to man’s existence in his need for spiritual comfort and redemption.
The poem closes here on a hopeful note and is very optimistic, as the child asserts with confidence that surely Allah is merciful and kind. Yet, in spite of all these odds against him, the speaking character goes forth with an element of trust vested in the power of prayer and faith to supersede the circumstances and gain success in this world and the next.
“Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua” is a beautiful reminder of the importance of prayer, faith, and anything spiritual in the life of a believer. It touches every age of humans and believes in their time; it inspires very spirits by the message of devotion, humility, and hope. This, while reciting the poem, reminds us how deep and serious the relationship should be between a human and the Divine and how this prayer can raise the soul high and bring comfort at the moment of need.
Here is the English translation of the Urdu poem “Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua” by Allama Iqbal:
My longing comes to my lips as supplication of mine
O God! bright like the candle be my life!
Through my life may the darkness of the world perish!
Let every place be illumined through my shining light!
Where through flowers the garden comes to grace,
May my mangled life shape such a cherished fate
Like the candle the life, O Lord, e’er be mine!
Like the moth to the lamp, O Lord, be my life’s chaste design!
Lit by my life a way there be for the poor, O God
May I love the old and suffering through my ways
O God! Thou shield me from the wicked paths
And reveal to me the one leading to the good paths
It must always be understood that by the great poet, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, it has been used in order to establish the historical and cultural value of “Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua.” This poem has been written in 1902 and is a cherished part of Urdu literature, enjoying wide acceptance among people from all walks of life for its generic message of entreaty and piety.
It is understood that government schools must be having a set of prayers to be recited daily. But at the same time, it is worthy that children must be exposed to diversities of cultural and religious expressions through the vehicle of secular education. A prayer such as ‘Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua’ will help create an environment of inclusivity, respect for the diversities of the people, and the celebration of the rich cultural heritage among students.
This decision seemingly represents such a level of disproportionality in suspending a school principal only for the above recitation of that prayer, without any cultural and cultural and literary significance attributed to the act of reciting the same. Besides, it takes no big heart to let students of every caste, creed, and race learn to live enmeshed in their symbiotic religious and cultural diversity throughout their stay at the institution in question.
The initiation of an investigation by the Department of Education is indeed a positive step forward. The hope is that the investigation will take into account the whole context of the situation and the importance of promoting cultural understanding and harmonious educational settings.
In other words, the acceptance of diversity and the inculcation of an inclusive climate within schools are imperative for the realization of wholesome learners who can effectively and successfully live in a rapidly interconnected, multicultural world. Therefore, policies and practices in education ought to hold values of secularism, pluralism, and respect for all communities..
