Ayatul Kursi, also known as the Throne Verse, is a vital Quranic verse in Islam. It can be located in Surah Al-Baqarah, which is the second chapter of the Quran and holds the 255th position therein. This verse stands out due to its deep meaning and spiritual importance for Muslims.
English Translation:
“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
Now, detailed explanation of Ayatul Kursi will be given:
- Absolute Monotheism:
Ayatul Kursi opens with an affirmation of the oneness of Allah: Allah! There is no deity but Him. The declaration affirms that Oneness is the core tenet of the belief in Islam. It means that other than Allah, the Creator and the Sustainer of the universe, there is no god.

- Divine Attributes:
The verse then goes ahead to describe some of His divine attributes: “the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence.” This reflects not only the essence of Allah as being timeless but also Him being truly the sustainer and maintainer of whatever exists.
- Divine Vigilance:
The watchfulness of Allah is further qualified by Ayatul Kursi when it points out that neither doze nor sleep overcomes Him. That is, this attribute pinpoints His awareness and watchfulness on His creation constantly. Unlike human beings, who after a period of work need to rest and sleep, all things in the universe are observed by Allah with unflinching alertness.

- Divine Ownership:
That is, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. His taking possession of all things, whether in the heavens or on earth, signifies His absolute authority over the universe, He being its Supreme Controller. Not a thing exists beyond the sphere of His authority and control.
- Divine Intercession :
Ayatul Kursi has posed the rhetorical question, “Who is he that can intercede with Him except by His permission?” This has brought out the single great authority of Allah. His consent for anyone to intercede will just pinpoint His authority to decide upon the ultimate judgment in Islam.
It is crystal clear from this verse that Allah’s knowledge consists of everything, from what is going on in the present, to what was there in the past, and what will be there in the times to come. Indeed, His knowledge is all total and all perfect; He is governed by this perfect knowledge for the making of decisions and judgments.
- Expansive Dominion:
In Ayatul Kursi, Allah’s “Kursi” or “Throne” is described as extending over the heavens and the earth. It is only a metaphor standing for His dominion and rulership over the whole universe. In other words, His dominion knows no bounds, and His hold is absolute.
- Unlimited Preservation:
It is emphasized that the security of the heavens and the earth does not fatigue Allah. He governs all affairs with ease and sustains all that is in them with ease. Again, this is bringing us back to the understanding that Allah is All-Powerful and that His protective and sustaining power does not feel any weight from tiredness.

- The Most High, The Most Great:
The verse concludes by exalting Allah as “the Most High” and “the Most Great.” This acts as a reminder of His transcendence and unmatched greatness. It brings into focus the idea of His supreme status over and above everything.
Importance and Contemporary Application:
Ayatul Kursi has great spiritual and protective significance; hence, Muslims are much accustomed to reciting it. Many Muslims recite it before going to sleep for Allah’s protection through the night. This ayah reminds them of Allah’s absolute sovereignty, omniscience, and power. The believers derive much consolation and strength from this verse, knowing full well that Allah is the Ever-Living, Sustainer of life, and His knowledge and power are infinite.
Ayatul Kursi comprises one of the most immense verses in the Book of Allah, which encompasses basic Islamic theological concepts about the oneness of Allah, His divine attributes, His authorities, His perfect knowledge, and vigilance; it is a verse of spiritual comfort and a reminder of the greatness of the Maker and Sustainer of the universe.
